Pizza Hut’s Tomato Wine Might Just Be the Most Fun Thing To Bring to the Holiday Party

The wine is meant to pair with pizza, and has notes of “perfectly baked pizza crust.”

If you’ve ever wondered which wine to pair with your pizza, Pizza Hut just might have the answer for you. The internationally-known chain is releasing a tomato-based wine in partnership with Irvine’s Just Beyond Paradise Winery, a Kansas-based family-run winemaking operation that utilizes offbeat fruits including apples, pears, blackberries, and, fittingly, tomatoes.

The first-of-its-kind collaboration has resulted in Tomato Wine by Pizza Hut, a “red” wine infused with real basil, as a nod to traditional pizza sauce. But the full tasting notes, as described in an announcement from Pizza Hut, promise a well-rounded pizza-like experience. “The wine offers an aromatic blend of fresh herbs and spices with rich, sun ripened tomato notes and a subtle hint of toasted oak reminiscent of a perfectly baked pizza crust.”

If you’re wondering how different this red-tinted wine might taste from your usual pinot, Pizza Hut’s announcement assures that, when chilled, the flavor is reminiscent of chilled white wines made with grapes. Available now (while supplies last), Tomato Wine by Pizza But comes in a red wax-capped 375 ml bottle for $25 (note that’s half the size of your typical wine bottle).

“The holidays are a time for many gatherings, but often the gift of a bottle of wine can feel expected. Why not be the one to bring the pizza party with the gift of pizza wine and a Triple Treat Box designed to ignite fun and conversation,” suggests Elyse Slayton, Pizza Hut’s Director of Advertising. “As a brand who has pioneered many firsts in the industry, we took a beloved, classic pairing of pizza and red wine and flipped it on its head as we aim to spark intrigue and create a more memorable holiday pizza party.”

As mentioned above, in addition to launching its pizza-fied wine, Pizza Hut is also bringing back the holiday-get-together-ready Triple Treat Box, which features “two medium one-topping pizzas, breadsticks or cheese sticks (for an upcharge), and a choice of dessert.” All of that comes packaged in a single, ugly sweater-themed box starting at $19.99.

However, if you want to get your hands on the wine to go with those pizzas, don’t fire up the Pizza Hut app. Tomato Wine by Pizza Hut is available exclusively from Irvine Winery at irvinewinery.com. There’s a two-bottle minimum for shipping, so you’ll have to pony up $50 for the wine or opt for the $60 Tomato Wine Gift Box which includes one bottle of wine, two stainless steel wine glasses in Pizza Hut red, and a matching wine opener. Irvine’s ships to 43 states, and shipping costs start at $10 (unless you can pick it up from their Lawrence, KS location).

But included free of charge is a surefire answer to the question “does this wine go with pizza?”
