Grape news for Pop-Tarts fans who came of age — back in the ’90s, aughts or before — eating a particular purple-jelly-filled variety of the classic toaster pastries. Frosted Grape Pop-Tarts are coming back.
Citing popular demand, particularly from Millennials, Kellogg’s is set to reintroduce the discontinued flavor this spring. Featuring the grape-jelly-flavored filling, white icing and purple “crunch-lets” die-hard fans remember, Frosted Grape Pop-Tarts will re-debut in Walmart stores this month and roll out more broadly to retailers nationwide in May. The suggested retail price for an 8-count box will be $3.99.
“Frosted Grape has been among the top [Pop-Tarts] flavors fans have been asking us to bring back,” Heidi Ray, Kellogg’s senior director of marketing for portable wholesome snacks, said in a news release. “So, we could not be more stoked to finally bring back this Pop-Tarts G.O.A.T. – Grape-ist Of All Time.”
While Frosted Grape Pop-Tarts lovers will obviously want to toast the flavor’s return, the brand is also encouraging another method of marking the occasion: Coloring one’s hair purple … because Frosted Grape.
Fifty Frosted Grape Pop-Tarts fans who show off a purple head of hair, highlights, extensions, wig or hair ornaments on Instagram and tag their posts with #Y2GrapeEntry will be rewarded with a year’s supply of Frosted Grape Pop-Tarts and a “Y2Grape Time Capsule” including butterfly hair clips, metallic jelly pens, grape lip gloss, a purple purse, a purple hat and a gift card to purchase purple jelly sandals, among other retro grape-evocative items.
The reception on social media has been favorable thus far.
“Been waiting a long time for these. My favorite flavor,” wrote one fan on Facebook.
It was also greeted with a clamoring for other late, lamented flavors.
“We need chocolate caramel back as well. PLEAAAAAASSSSSSSE!!!?!?!!??” one Facebooker howled.
“But where are the Chocolate Vanilla Cream ones at!?!” wondered another.
“Now we just need the return of apple and cinnamon,” suggested a third.
One at a time, nostalgic Pop-Tarts fans. One at a time …
